Paty Cantú Proves She Is Not Alone/ Paty Cantú demuestra que no se queda sola.
After two weeks of me promising to review this CD, here is my attempt of a good review. Yes, Paty Cantu’s solo album, “Me quedo sola”, came out in January but a lot of people still don’t know who she is. Plus, the CD hasn’t left the TOP 10 most sold albums in Mexico since its release. That is why “Me quedo sola” is the CD OF THE MONTH.
Después de tanto hablar del disco solista de Paty Cantú, al fin voy a hacer mi reseña. Ya se que el disco salio a la venta desde enero, pero muchos aun no conocen quien es Paty Cantú y por eso he nombrado “Me quedo sola” como el DISCO DEL MES.
So was Paty left alone? Why did Lu have to break up? I’m sure someday we will find out the truth, but in the meantime WHO CARES, JUST READ ON.

Back-story to “Me quedo sola”
Paty released her single, “Dejame ir” back in September along with “Ayudame a no llorar”, “Me quedo sola” and “No fue suficiente” on her myspace and since then I’ve been skeptical about the whole album. All those songs with the exception of “Ayudame a no llorar” sounded like Lu’s second album, “Album”. “Ayudame a no llorar” sounded like something refreshing and completely different from the other three songs. When artists go solo, they take a huge risk in their careers, because fans wonder whether they will sound like what they’ve done in the past. Any new album can make or break an artist and Paty was going to stick to the music style that defined Lu. However, you can’t judge an album based on four songs.

Lo primero que escuchamos de la ex Lu fue la nueva versión de “Dos Palabras” con Motel. En el mes de septiembre, Paty lanza su primer sencillo “Déjame ir” junto con “Ayúdame a no llorar”, “No fue suficiente” y “Me quedo sola” por su myspace oficial. Desde que oí las cuatro canciones no estaba seguro si quería hacer algo diferente a lo que ya había hecho en Lu, porque tres de las cuatro canciones mantenían el mismo estilo del segundo disco de ellos, “Álbum”. En cambio “Ayúdame a no llorar” suena distinta y refrescante aunque la canción habla del desamor. Cuando ex integrantes de agrupaciones sacan sus discos como solistas, críticos al igual que fans se preguntan si sonara igual o mejor que sus trabajos pasados. Al parecer Paty iba a seguir con el mismo estilo de Lu, pero nunca hay que juzgar un disco por cuatro canciones.
Life During and After Lu’s Break Up
After Lu’s break up in the fall of 2007, everybody wondered who was going to release a single first. Paty Cantu was the smart one because as soon as “Dejame ir” was ready, she released it as the first single. Former fans of Lu were excited that at least she was working on an album and began to support Paty with her new project. Mario “Cejas” Sandoval wrote most of the songs in Lu, but now that Mario is not with her, Paty can shine all by herself. In the two Lu albums, she co-wrote “Se” with Mario as well as “La vida despues de ti”. By herself she wrote “Sin un adios” and helped write “Marta” included in Alejandra Guzman’s 2006 album, “Indeleble”. She also translated Nikki Clan’s biggest hit-to-date, “No me digas que no” as well as Jeans’s “Tu falso amor”. Let’s remember that she’s only 25.
La vida durante y después de la desintegración de Lu:
Cuando Lu oficialmente anunció su separación en el 2007, muchos se preguntaron si Mario Sandoval o Paty Cantú seguirían vigentes en la música. Paty realmente lleva la delantera porque cuando ya estaba listo el primer sencillo lo lanzó . Muchos de los fans de Lu siguieron apoyando a Paty y ansiosamente esperaban el lanzamiento del disco completo. Mario “Cejas” Sandoval escribió casi la mayoría de las canciones de Lu, pero ahora que no esta Mario con ella, Paty puede lucirse y destacarse como una cantautora excepcional. En Lu, compuso los temas “Sé ” y “La vida después de ti”. Sola compuso “Sin un adiós” y también escribió la canción de Alejandra Guzmán, “Marta” incluida en su disco del 2006, “Indeleble“. También ha traducido el exitazo de Nikki Clan “No me digas que no” y “Tu falso amor” de las Jeans. Un dato curioso es que Paty cambio de casa disquera. Ella esta en EMI Televisa Music y Mario se quedo en Warner, y aun no ha presentado un sencillo oficial, nada mas demos. Recuerden que Patricia Giovanna Cantú solo tiene 25 años .

“Me quedo sola” is produced by Loris Cerroni (ov7, Alejandra Guzman) and Luis Fernando Ochoa (Shakira) who also helped with the music to her songs. The opening song to the CD is “Un amor diferente” which is one of the first songs Paty Cantu wrote after Lu was officially over. I take it as a song to her fans, asking for their support after the separation because now as a solo artist she’s finding a different, new kind of love. Though most of the songs talk about breaking up (there is no proof whether Paty dedicates them to Mario Sandoval) and getting over bad relationships, Paty and her producers managed to make some songs more upbeat (“Un amor diferente”, “Pensaras en mi”, “Solo por estar” and “Quiero todo, quiero nada”) and not sound like a complete pop ballad such as “Fui una mas“ or “Me quedo sola”. I think Paty Cantu’s songwriting outweighs everything because she does it so well. The only song Paty did not write is the ninth track, “Eclipse”, which is written by Rodrigo Davila from Motel. If you pay close attention it totally sounds like a rock ballad of Motel which shows how versatile Paty is. As for the last song, “Quiero todo, quiero nada” it is different from the others because Paty speaks about what she is looking for in a relationship. I highly recommend this CD for anyone that has ever fallen in love and been disappointed with the end of a relationship. I also recommend it because Paty Cantu is one of the most talented songwriters in Mexico and although she is just starting out, she has a bright future ahead of her. La primera canción del disco, “Un amor diferente” fue una de las primeras canciones que escribió Paty al desintegrarse Lu. La canción habla sobre lo que siente Paty ya como solista, pidiéndole a sus fans que sigan con ella y así ella reencontrarse con ellos con “un amor muy diferente”. La mayoría de las canciones hablan sobre el desamor y lo que fue para Paty haber dejado Lu (Paty no ha dicho si alguna canción es dedicada a Mario Sandoval) pero los productores les pusieron arreglos a las canciones que las hacen un poco mas moviditas como en “Solo por estar”, “Quiero todo, quiero nada”, “Ayúdame a no llorar” y “Pensaras en mi”. Creo que las letras de las canciones sobrepasa todo porque Paty es una excelente cantautora. Al escuchar el tema numero 9, “Eclipse” se nota la influencia de Motel y ayuda a mostrar la versatilidad de Paty. El tema final, “Quiero todo, quiero nada” es diferente a los demás porque habla sobre lo que busca Paty en una relación. Aunque Paty Cantú apenas comienza su carrera como solista, tiene un gran futuro por delante, especialmente porque escribe buenísimas canciones que vienen del corazón.
